Private South Shore Waterfall Adventure
Volcanic coastlines, legendary waterfalls, and black sand beaches on Iceland's iconic South Shore.
The South Shore Waterfall Adventure is a full-day private tour tracing the volcanic edge of Iceland's southern coastline, from towering waterfalls in the foothills of Eyjafjallajökull to the dramatic black sand shores of Reynisfjara near the village of Vík.
The route follows the Ring Road past two of Iceland's most celebrated waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, both fed by glacial rivers descending directly from volcanic ice caps. On clear days, the gleaming outlet glaciers of Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull are visible from the road, framing the landscape in ice and stone.
Further east, the sands shift to deep volcanic black as the tour reaches Reynisfjara beach, one of the most striking coastal environments in the North Atlantic. Basalt columns rise from the hillside, rock formations called Reynisdrangar pierce the surf, and puffins nest in the cliffs during summer months.
This private format means the pace is flexible and the experience is shaped around your group, whether you visit under the lingering brightness of the midnight sun or the cold clarity of a winter sky.
Tour Highlights
Walk behind Seljalandsfoss waterfall as it drops nearly 200 feet from the flanks of Eyjafjallajökull volcano.
Stand at the base of Skógafoss, an 80-foot-wide cascade that plunges into a walkable gorge carved by the Skógá River.
Explore Reynisfjara black sand beach, where basalt columns and sea stacks frame one of Iceland's most photographed coastlines.
View the ice caps and outlet glaciers of both Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull on days with good visibility.
Visit the scenic coastal village of Vík í Mýrdal, set against bird cliffs and the southernmost point of Iceland's mainland.
Spot puffins nesting in the cliffs at Reynisfjara during the summer season.
Travel as a private group with the option to upgrade to a driver-guide or add glacier walks and museum visits.
Itinerary Overview
The tour's first stop is Seljalandsfoss, where the Seljalandsá River drops almost 200 feet from the edge of Eyjafjallajökull. A shallow cave formed by the overhanging rock face allows visitors to walk entirely behind the curtain of falling water.
Skógafoss in the Skógá River is 80 feet wide and nearly 200 feet tall, with a flat approach that lets you walk directly to its base. The nearby Skógar Museum holds a metal ring said to be from a legendary treasure chest once hidden behind the falls by a settler named Thrasi.
The route continues east along the Ring Road, passing through the expansive black volcanic sand plains that cover much of Iceland's South Coast. Views of Mýrdalsjökull glacier and, on clear days, the ice cap of Eyjafjallajökull accompany the drive.
The easternmost point of the tour is the small village of Vík, situated at the foot of Mýrdalsjökull and bordered by active bird cliffs. The village marks the edge of one of Iceland's longest stretches of black sand coastline.
Reynisfjara sits at the southernmost tip of Iceland's mainland, with columns of basalt stacked against the hillside and the sea stacks of Reynisdrangar rising offshore. The beach is noted for powerful Atlantic surf and, in summer, large colonies of puffins in the surrounding cliffs.
