Sea Experience: Whale Watching & Swimming with Dolphins in Sao Miguel
A complete maritime day combining cetacean observation, a picnic lunch, and an open-ocean dolphin swim off the coast of Sao Miguel Island.
The Azores dolphin and whale watching full-day experience offered by Picos de Aventura is one of the most immersive ways to encounter the Atlantic Ocean around Sao Miguel Island. Guided by qualified marine biologists, the program combines responsible wildlife observation with an open-water swim alongside wild dolphins.
The morning session departs from Marina Pero de Teive aboard a fast semi-rigid inflatable vessel. A briefing led by marine biologists introduces participants to the roughly 28 cetacean species recorded in Azorean waters before the boat heads offshore to locate and observe whale and dolphin pods in their natural habitat.
After returning to the marina for a relaxed picnic-style lunch, the afternoon shifts to an even more personal encounter. Participants don snorkeling equipment and, following a careful briefing, enter the water to swim alongside free-ranging dolphins, always respecting the animals' space and natural behavior.
Throughout the day, the rugged volcanic coastline of Sao Miguel provides a dramatic backdrop, offering views of geological formations that underscore the island's unique position in the mid-Atlantic.

How the Day Unfolds
Participants gather at Marina Pero de Teive in Ponta Delgada. The marine biology team delivers an introductory briefing covering cetacean species, ocean conditions, and observation guidelines before boarding.
The semi-rigid vessel departs the marina for an offshore session lasting approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. The team locates whale and dolphin groups while sharing information about Azorean marine ecosystems and the importance of conservation.
After returning to shore, participants enjoy a picnic-style lunch. This interval provides time to rest, change, and prepare for the afternoon water activity.
Before re-boarding, guides explain snorkeling techniques, equipment use, and the protocols for approaching dolphins in open water safely and responsibly.
The boat locates free-ranging dolphin groups offshore. Participants enter the water gradually and swim alongside the dolphins for approximately 2 hours, always maintaining a respectful distance and following guide instructions.
The vessel returns to Marina Pero de Teive, completing a full day on the Atlantic. Participants leave with snorkeling gear returned and any questions addressed by the guide team.
