The Natural Waterfalls Hike: Rabaçal to Paul da Serra
Through ancient heather forests and cascading water to the heights of Madeira's highland plateau.
This guided route through Rabaçal natural waterfalls leads hikers into one of Madeira's most pristine and ecologically rich valleys, where giant heather trees form dense canopies above a levada fed by living water.
The trail winds through lush, moss-carpeted terrain alongside Ribeira da Janela, offering continuous views over one of the island's most dramatic river valleys. The path rewards steady effort with the discovery of the source waterfall that feeds the levada, a moment that marks both a natural highlight and a turning point in the route.
From the waterfall, the hike climbs steadily upward toward the Paul da Serra plateau, Madeira's highest and most expansive highland. The transition from dense forest to open moorland provides a striking contrast that captures the full range of the island's landscape character.
This is a moderate-difficulty route best suited to walkers with some trail experience. Terrain can be uneven and damp, and the ascent to the plateau requires sustained effort, making appropriate footwear and hydration essential.
