Guided Tour of Cuenca and Its Cathedral: Medieval City, Hanging Houses and Bridge of San Pablo
Walk through Spain's first Gothic city, from castle ruins to vertiginous balconies over the Huécar gorge.
This guided tour of Cuenca Cathedral and the Medieval City covers the full arc of the UNESCO-listed old town on foot, linking its castle, cathedral, Hanging Houses, and the iconic Bridge of San Pablo in a single coherent route. The pace is easy and the distance is short, making it accessible to most visitors regardless of fitness level.
The route begins at a panoramic viewpoint above the Huécar River sickle, where the full silhouette of the old city comes into focus before you descend into its streets. From that vantage point the logic of the medieval layout becomes clear: every major monument was placed to command the gorge.
Inside the cathedral a narrow spiral staircase leads up to the clerestory, where the view across the nave and out over the Main Square is one of the more unusual perspectives available in any Spanish city. The visit finishes across the Bridge of San Pablo, on the far bank, where the Hanging Houses align perfectly for photographs.
Tour Highlights
Visit the Nuestra Señora de Gracia Cathedral, the first Gothic monument built in Spain, consecrated in 1208 and commissioned by Alfonso VIII.
Climb the clerestory spiral staircase for a close-up view of the cathedral ceiling and a panoramic look over the new city and the Jucar River meanders.
Step inside the Hanging Houses, the defining architectural image of Cuenca, where medieval balconies extend directly over the gorge.
Explore the Museum of Abstract Art, housed within the Hanging Houses, with works by Chillida, Tapies, Oteiza, Zobel and others from the Spanish abstract generation of the 1950s and 1960s.
Cross the Bridge of San Pablo for the most photographed view of the Hanging Houses set against the cliff face and the old city skyline.
Follow a logical walking route from the Castle through all major emblematic buildings of the walled medieval quarter without retracing steps.
Itinerary
The tour starts at the Castle of Cuenca, where an unobstructed panoramic view over the Sickle of the Huécar River frames the entire old city below. This opening stop provides the geographic and historical context for everything that follows.
The cathedral was built by order of Alfonso VIII after the Reconquest of Cuenca in 1177, with the Gothic style introduced by his wife Leonor de Aquitania, sister of Richard the Lionheart. Stained glass creates shifting light effects that move the interior through several architectural periods, from the twelfth century to the Baroque.
A small spiral staircase ascends to the upper level of the cathedral, giving visitors a direct view of the vaulted ceiling and the stained glass from above. From this height the Main Square and the meanders of the Jucar River are visible beyond the rooftops.
The Hanging Houses, or Casas Colgadas, are the most recognised symbol of Cuenca, their timber balconies projecting over the vertical cliff of the Huécar gorge. Inside, the Museum of Abstract Art holds a significant collection of mid-twentieth-century Spanish abstract painting and sculpture, including pieces by Canogar, Feito, Millares and Chillida.
The pedestrian iron bridge crossing the Huécar gorge connects the old city to the former convent of San Pablo. From the far bank the Hanging Houses and the cliff face below the cathedral compose the view that appears in nearly every image of Cuenca.
