Lodè: Trekking to Punta Cupeti on Montalbo
Reach the highest peak of Montalbo and take in panoramic views stretching from ancient limestone ridges to the Tyrrhenian coastline.
This guided half-day hike leads you to Punta Cupeti on Montalbo, the dramatic limestone massif rising above the Baronia region of Sardinia, where sweeping views reward every step of a trail that demands no technical experience.
Departing from the quiet village of Lodè in the Nuoro province, the route climbs dirt trails through macchia scrubland and oak woodland to an elevation of more than 1,000 metres. The white limestone surface of the mountain, which gives Montalbo its name meaning White Mountain, creates a striking visual contrast against the surrounding forest.
From the summit of Punta Cupeti the horizon opens wide, revealing the silhouette of the Island of Tavolara to the northeast, the jagged Baronia coastline, and on clear days the distant gulf of Cala Gonone. The 5-kilometre circuit covers a modest 280-metre elevation gain, making it well suited for walkers of mixed fitness levels.
The trail is classified at the standard Italian hikers grade, meaning it follows clear, non-technical paths throughout. Families with older children, experienced walkers seeking a scenic outing, and those new to Sardinian trekking will all find this route accessible and deeply rewarding.

Itinerary
The group assembles in the village of Lodè in the Nuoro province, where the guide provides an overview of the route, safety information, and the natural and cultural context of the Montalbo massif.
The hike begins along dirt tracks that rise steadily through oak and holm oak woodland. The canopy provides shade during the initial climb and the trail surface is firm and easy to follow.
As the tree cover thins, the characteristic white limestone rocks emerge underfoot and on the surrounding ridgeline. The guide explains the geology and ecology of this distinctive Sardinian environment.
Reaching the highest peak of Montalbo, walkers enjoy an unrestricted 360-degree panorama. Views extend to Tavolara Island, the Baronia coast, and on favourable days as far as Cala Gonone.
The group descends via the same or a parallel trail back through the woodland to the starting point in Lodè. The total walking time is approximately four hours including summit stops.
