Regina Giovanna and Massa Lubrense Trekking Weekend
Two days of ancient paths, crystal-clear coves, and lemon-scented hillside villages along the Sorrento Peninsula.
This Sorrento Peninsula trekking weekend combines two carefully curated routes that trace the footsteps of history, connecting Roman ruins, coastal villages, and dramatic clifftop scenery across back-to-back days of walking.
On the first day, walkers follow ancient mule tracks across the Sorrento hill toward the archaeological site of the Bagni della Regina Giovanna, a Roman villa complex perched above the sea, where a natural rock pool invites a well-earned swim. The return route leads through the Borgo Marinaro of Marina Grande and the historic center of Sorrento.
The second day shifts focus toward Massa Lubrense, a quieter corner of the peninsula where terraced lemon groves, the Borgo di Santa Maria Annunziata, and the former residence of Gioacchino Murat compose a landscape that feels far removed from the busier coastal towns. The descent to Marina della Lobra along the cliff known as the blue kilometer is among the most rewarding stretches of coastal walking on the peninsula.
Both routes are rated at tourist difficulty, making the weekend accessible to walkers with a reasonable level of fitness and a genuine curiosity for the cultural and natural heritage of this stretch of the Campanian coast.

Itinerary
The route begins on the ancient paths of the Sorrento hill, crossing terraced countryside toward Capo di Sorrento. The archaeological site of the Bagni della Regina Giovanna — a Roman villa with commanding sea views — marks the first major stop, with time to explore the ruins and the natural rock pool below.
From the ruins, the path descends to the natural Nymphaeum at the water's edge, where a sheltered inlet offers calm, clear water for swimming. This is the most popular refreshment stop of the first day, and rightly so given its unusual geological character.
The return to Sorrento passes along sections of the old city walls and through the Borgo Marinaro of Marina Grande before entering the historic center. Total elevation change is approximately 150 meters; walking time is around six hours.
The second day starts on the narrow streets and footpaths of the Sorrento hill heading southwest toward Massa Lubrense. The characteristic main square of the town and its tightly woven alleyways offer an early cultural contrast to the open coastal views that follow.
The route continues to the Borgo di Santa Maria Annunziata, where the former residence of Gioacchino Murat stands above a panorama that includes Capri. This is one of the quietest and most historically layered stops on the entire weekend.
The descent along the blue kilometer cliff leads to Marina della Lobra and its clear, sunlit waters. The return to Sorrento follows the elevated lanes of the Vigliano hills, covering approximately 250 meters of elevation change across an eight-hour day.
