Hornvík Heights and Sights: A 2-Day Hike into the Heart of Hornstrandir
Two days of raw Arctic wilderness, towering bird cliffs, and encounters with Iceland's most elusive wildlife.
This Hornstrandir hiking tour takes you deep into one of Iceland's last truly untouched nature reserves, guiding you along the dramatic Hornbjarg bird cliffs and down into the sheltered stillness of Hornvík Bay. It is the definitive two-day experience for travellers who want to see the best of Hornstrandir without compromise. Guided by experienced local experts, every step of the route is designed to maximise your connection with this extraordinary landscape.
Hornstrandir is unlike anywhere else in Iceland. Accessible only by boat, the peninsula has no permanent roads, no services, and no shortcuts — what you find here is pure, unfiltered Arctic nature shaped by centuries of solitude. The coastline you pass on the boat crossing still carries the traces of the farming and fishing communities that once called these remote bays home.
Camping in Hornvík means you are present for the moments most visitors never witness. The midnight sun pours directly into the bay, the Arctic Fox moves freely across the beach in the low evening light, and the silence is broken only by the calls of seabirds returning to the cliffs. Evenings are spent in a heated communal tent, where gear dries and conversations flow naturally between fellow travellers.
The hiking itself demands respect. With 550 metres of altitude gain on day one and 450 metres on day two, the terrain is classified as challenging and rewards those who come prepared. Guides are present throughout and provide support on the steeper descents, particularly on the snow-covered pass on the second day.

Itinerary
The group meets at the office on Aðalstræti 17 in downtown Ísafjörður for a thorough briefing covering route details, safety information, and final gear checks. The passenger boat departs from the harbour shortly after, beginning the two-to-three-hour crossing to Hornvík Bay along the full Hornstrandir coastline.
The boat lands beneath the old farm of Horn, where the hike begins with a circumnavigation of the Hornbjarg bird cliffs. The route brings you to the cliff edge at 400 metres, where the scale of the nesting colony — and the Arctic Foxes foraging on the beach below — becomes fully apparent. Total distance: 12 km. Altitude gain: 550 m.
Dinner is prepared at the basecamp in Hornvík, and the evening is yours to explore the bay, rest, or observe wildlife as the midnight sun remains above the horizon. The heated tent provides a warm and comfortable space for socialising and drying equipment overnight.
After a hearty breakfast, the group sets out from Hornvík towards Veiðileysufjörður on the southern side of the peninsula. The route climbs to 500 metres and passes through a snow-covered mountain pass before descending to the fjord pickup point. Total distance: 11 km. Altitude gain: 450 m.
The passenger boat collects the group from Veiðileysufjörður in the late afternoon and returns to Ísafjörður in approximately one hour. This itinerary is subject to change based on weather conditions, sea state, and the pace of the group.
