Kayak des Calanques et Iles de Marseille : Tour de l'Ile de Riou
Paddle along wild limestone cliffs, deserted islands, and secret sandy coves on one of France's most spectacular coastlines.
This full-day sea kayak tour Marseille Calanques takes paddlers from the sheltered port of Callelongue deep into the protected archipelago of the Marseille Islands, reaching the rugged and largely inaccessible Ile de Riou. The route combines open-water crossings, towering limestone sea cliffs, and peaceful hidden beaches rarely visited by land-based travellers.
Departing from Callelongue — the last point reachable by road along Marseille's southern coastline — the itinerary heads out to Ile Jarre before crossing to Ile de Riou, the largest and most dramatic of the Marseille island group. The southern cliffs of Riou rise in striking limestone columns that draw comparisons to the architectural forms of Antoni Gaudi.
The Marseille Islands receive less annual rainfall than anywhere else in mainland France, and the combination of intense sun and persistent wind has shaped a uniquely resilient coastal flora. These same conditions make the islands a critical nesting refuge for seabirds including the Yelkouan Shearwater, the European Shag, and large colonies of the Yellow-legged Gull.
Because weather and sea conditions directly determine the route, flexibility is built into every departure. The guide adapts the itinerary to ensure both safety and the best possible experience on the water.

Itinerary
The tour launches from the small port of Callelongue, the final point accessible by road along Marseille's southern shore. After a briefing and equipment fitting, the group paddles out along the coast toward Ile Jarre.
Paddlers follow the shoreline of Ile Jarre before making the open-water crossing to Ile de Riou, the largest island in the Marseille archipelago. The crossing requires moderate paddling fitness and is subject to sea conditions on the day.
The first rest stop is the small sandy beach of Calanque de Fontange on the northern side of Riou. The group then rounds the island, passing beneath the dramatic limestone columns of the southern cliffs before rounding Pointe de Caramassaigne.
A second beach break is taken at Calanque de Monastério, a sheltered cove with a fine sand beach on the lee side of the island. This is the main lunch and swimming stop of the day.
The return leg passes the rocky and uninhabited Ile Calseraigne before reaching the coast at Calanque de Marseilleveyre. Despite having no road access, this calanque has traditional fishing cabins and a well-known waterfront bar-restaurant.
The final section follows the coastline back to the departure point at Callelongue, completing a full circuit of the Marseille island group. Total paddling distance varies depending on conditions and route adaptations.
