Jeep Safari to Mons Claudianus from Safaga

Journey into Rome's ancient quarry hidden deep in the Red Sea mountains of Egypt

A 5-hour off-road adventure from Safaga takes you deep into Egypt's Eastern Desert to explore Mons Claudianus, the remarkable Roman quarry that supplied granodiorite stone for some of antiquity's most celebrated monuments. The site sits roughly 40 km along the Safaga-Qena road, 120 km east of the Nile, and 500 km south of Cairo. Rated easy in difficulty, this excursion suits most fitness levels.

Discovered in 1823 by Wilkinson and Burton, Mons Claudianus was actively quarried by Rome from the 1st century AD to the mid-3rd century AD. The site once housed an estimated 1,000 people, including Roman soldiers, skilled civilian workers, and their families. The arid desert conditions have preserved an extraordinary range of organic remains and written documents on pottery shards known as Ostraca.

Visitors can walk among broken columns, some reaching 60 feet in height and weighing up to 200 tonnes, alongside ancient basins and bath structures that still stand to roof height. The site's garrison walls and projecting towers give a vivid impression of the fortified settlement that once operated here. Approximately 50 km away lies Mons Porphyrites, the world's only known ancient source of imperial purple porphyry.

The stones quarried here were shaped on-site to reduce weight before being hauled overland to the Nile on wooden sledges by a combination of human labor, donkeys, and camels. Barges then floated the columns downriver during spring floods, after which they crossed the Mediterranean to Rome's port of Ostia. This logistical chain connected Egypt's desert mountains directly to the heart of the Roman Empire.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Mons Claudianus and why is it historically significant?
Mons Claudianus was a Roman imperial quarry in Egypt's Eastern Desert, actively worked from the 1st to the mid-3rd century AD. It supplied granodiorite stone used in major Roman structures including the columns of the Pantheon's portico, Hadrian's Villa at Tivoli, the Temple of Venus, and Diocletian's Palace at Split.
How far is Mons Claudianus from Safaga?
The quarry site is located approximately 40 km along the Safaga-Qena road in Egypt's Eastern Desert. It sits about 120 km east of the Nile River and 500 km south of Cairo.
Is this tour suitable for beginners or non-hikers?
Yes, the tour is rated easy and does not involve strenuous physical activity. Walking on the site is on uneven desert ground, so comfortable footwear is recommended.
What can visitors see at the quarry today?
Visitors can see broken and unfinished granite columns — the largest standing 60 feet tall and weighing around 200 tonnes — as well as garrison walls, bath structures, storage rooms, and scattered Ostraca (inscribed pottery shards). Many buildings still survive to roof height.
What were the Ostraca found at Mons Claudianus?
Ostraca are pottery fragments with inscriptions that served as written records at the quarry. They documented worker wages — around 47 drachmas per month — food allocations, administrative orders, and references to the four groups living on site: soldiers, skilled workers, unskilled workers, and women with children.
How were the massive stones transported from the quarry to Rome?
Columns were shaped on-site to reduce weight, then hauled over 100 km to the Nile on wooden sledges using human and animal labor. They were loaded onto barges during spring floods, shipped down the Nile to the Mediterranean, and transported by vessel to Rome's port of Ostia before being pulled up the Tiber River to the city.
