Iglesias: Panoramic Hiking from Nebida to Masua
Walk the ancient mining trails of south-western Sardinia, from sea cliffs to the iconic Pan di Zucchero stack.
This coastal hike from Nebida to Masua is one of the most rewarding walking routes in south-western Sardinia, tracing a path where raw natural scenery meets centuries of mining heritage along the Sulcis coastline.
The 5.5 km trail follows a historic route once used by miners, winding along dramatic cliffs that drop sharply into turquoise water. Each bend in the path opens onto a wider view than the last, with the sea constantly present below.
The walk passes the industrial remnants of Laveria la Marmora, a striking example of 19th-century mining architecture perched at the edge of the sea. This site offers a compelling glimpse into the industrial past of a region shaped as much by human labor as by geological forces.
The route concludes near the Pan di Zucchero, a towering sea stack rising from clear water and considered one of the most distinctive landmarks in all of Sardinia. A stop on the beach includes a snack of tomato focaccia and a glass of local wine.
Tour Highlights
Panoramic views over the Sulcis coastline from elevated cliff-top paths throughout the route.
Spectacular sea stacks rising from crystal-clear water, including the landmark Pan di Zucchero formation.
Visit to Laveria la Marmora, a well-preserved industrial mining site overlooking the sea.
Walking a historic coastal path that retraces the original routes used by Sardinian miners.
A beach break with tomato focaccia and a glass of regional wine offered during the hike.
Unspoilt Mediterranean scrubland and cliff vegetation framing views at every stage of the walk.
Itinerary
The hike begins at the village of Nebida, where the trail connects immediately to the coastal path heading south. The first section already delivers elevated views across the sea.
The route follows the cliff edge above the Sulcis sea, passing dramatic vertical drops and sea stacks visible from the path. The trail surface is well-defined, though attention is required on steeper sections.
The path passes the historic industrial complex of Laveria la Marmora, where ore-processing structures from the 19th century still stand at the sea's edge. This is one of the most photographed industrial heritage sites in Sardinia.
A rest stop on the beach provides time to appreciate the surroundings before the final stretch. Tomato focaccia and a glass of local wine are offered here.
The hike ends near Masua, where the Pan di Zucchero sea stack dominates the horizon. At approximately 133 metres tall, it is the largest sea stack in Italy.
