Goðafoss Waterfall, Lake Mývatn & Nature Mývatn Baths from Akureyri Port
Waterfalls, volcanic wonders, and geothermal relaxation in one unforgettable day.
This full-day adventure from Akureyri Port takes you deep into the volcanic heart of North Iceland, where a Lake Mývatn day tour reveals one of the country's most geologically diverse regions shaped by a massive basaltic eruption 2,300 years ago. From a historically significant waterfall to boiling mud pots and a geothermal bathing lagoon, every stop on this route offers a distinct encounter with Iceland's raw landscape.
The route follows Eyjafjörður, one of Iceland's longest fjords, before ascending into the highlands around Mývatn. The area gained international recognition as a filming location for Game of Thrones, and the scenery makes it immediately clear why the production team chose it.
By the end of the day, you will have walked through ancient lava fields, stood at the boundary between two tectonic plates, and soaked in mineral-rich geothermal waters. The tour is rated easy, making it accessible to a broad range of travelers, and returns you to Akureyri Port in time for your departure.
Tour Highlights
Stand at Goðafoss, the historically significant waterfall where Iceland's conversion to Christianity is said to have taken place, and capture rainbow-framed photographs with guide assistance.
Explore Skútustaðagígar pseudo craters, a geological phenomenon found in only a handful of places on Earth, including Iceland, Hawaii, the Azores, and Mars.
Walk through Dimmuborgir, a surreal field of hardened lava pillars and arches formed thousands of years ago by trapped steam beneath a flowing lava lake.
Visit Grjótagjá cave and observe the vivid blue geothermal river within, then stand on the rift between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates.
Witness the Hverir geothermal field, where fumaroles vent sulfurous steam and mud pots bubble at the surface, drawing comparisons to Yellowstone National Park.
Unwind in the Nature Mývatn Baths, a geothermal lagoon offering steam baths and mineral-rich warm water in a dramatic volcanic setting.
Itinerary
The tour begins with a free pick-up at a designated location near the port. The drive along Eyjafjörður takes approximately 35 minutes to the first stop.
Spend around 40 minutes at one of Iceland's most storied waterfalls. A small shop and toilet facilities are available on site, and the guide will suggest the best angles for photography.
Following a 35-minute drive to the lake area, the group visits Skútustaðagígar pseudo craters, then Dimmuborgir lava formations with a short walk on the valley floor. Grjótagjá cave follows, where the tectonic rift is accessible from above and the geothermal river is visible inside. Combined time at these stops is approximately two hours.
A short drive of around eight minutes leads to the Hverir fumarole field. About 30 minutes are allocated to observe the boiling mud pots, steam vents, and mineral-stained ground. Note that a strong sulfur smell is present throughout this area.
The final excursion stop allows approximately one hour and 20 minutes for bathing, relaxing in the steam room, and lunch. Guests are advised to remove silver and copper jewelry before entering the water to avoid discoloration.
The return drive takes around 80 minutes. If time permits, the group may stop at a viewpoint over Eyjafjörður for a final photograph looking back toward Akureyri.
