Piazza Armerina and Valley of the Temples from Taormina
Two UNESCO World Heritage Sites — Roman mosaics and Greek temples — in a single unforgettable day across Sicily.
This full-day tour from Taormina takes you deep into the cultural heartland of Sicily, combining the mosaic-covered floors of the Roman Villa of Casale with the monumental Greek sanctuaries of Agrigento's Valley of the Temples.
The journey begins with a comfortable drive through Sicily's interior, where rolling hills and agricultural landscapes set the scene before your arrival in Piazza Armerina. The Roman Villa of Casale, buried for centuries and rediscovered only in the twentieth century, preserves some of the finest Roman floor mosaics in the world.
After an independent lunch break, the route continues southwest toward Agrigento. The Valley of the Temples, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, shelters some of the best-preserved ancient Greek architecture outside of Greece itself.
Tour Highlights
Walk through the Roman Villa of Casale and view approximately 3,500 square meters of intact floor mosaics dating to the 4th century AD.
Explore the Temple of Concordia, the Temple of Hera, the Temple of Hercules, and the Temple of Zeus in Agrigento's Valley of the Temples.
Visit two separate UNESCO World Heritage Sites in a single day, both representing extraordinary periods of Mediterranean civilization.
Travel through Sicily's scenic interior, a region rarely seen on standard coastal itineraries, on the way between the two sites.
Enjoy a flexible, self-guided visit at each site, with the option to hire a licensed local guide on arrival for a deeper experience.
Hotel pickup and drop-off in Taormina included, with no need to arrange independent transportation to either archaeological site.
Itinerary
Your driver meets you at your accommodation in Taormina. The route heads inland through Sicily's central landscape toward Piazza Armerina.
Arrive at the Villa del Casale, a 4th-century Roman villa covering around 3,500 square meters of polychrome floor mosaics. The site, a UNESCO World Heritage property, was unknown to the modern world until excavations in the twentieth century brought it to light. Explore independently or arrange a licensed local guide on arrival; admission fees are payable on site.
Time is set aside for an independent lunch at your own pace and choice. Your driver can offer guidance on local options near the villa.
A two-hour drive brings you to Agrigento and the Valley of the Temples, where Greek colonists from Rhodes and Crete established the city of Akragas in 582 BC. The walking tour covers the Temple of Hera, the Temple of Concordia, the Temple of Hercules, and the Temple of Zeus. Visits are self-guided; admission fees are payable on site, and licensed local guides are available for hire.
After approximately two hours at the Valley of the Temples, the vehicle departs for Taormina. Drop-off is arranged as close as possible to your hotel.
