Solar Eclipse Hike: Aðalvík to Grænahlíð Ridge
A rare celestial event meets one of Iceland's most dramatic wilderness coastlines
This solar eclipse hike in Hornstrandir combines a challenging mountain ascent through a remote Arctic cirque valley with the once-in-a-generation experience of watching the sky darken over glacial fjords and towering sea cliffs.
From the abandoned fishing shores of Aðalvík Bay to the WWII-era radar station perched above 500-metre cliffs, every segment of this route carries both natural and historical weight. The ascent follows the original funicular tracks cut into the mountain during wartime operations, offering a physical connection to a chapter of Icelandic and Allied history that few visitors ever encounter.
The descent along the Grænahlíð ridge leads to Teistuvatn Lake, where Whooper Swans rest on calm water as Fulmars and Puffins work the coastal updrafts below. It is here, surrounded by undisturbed wilderness, that the solar eclipse unfolds across the landscape.

Itinerary
The day begins at the Service Center with a full trip briefing covering route conditions, safety, and the eclipse viewing plan. The group then boards the boat and sets off through the dramatic fjord scenery of Ísafjarðardjúp.
The boat reaches Aðalvík, where the remains of Látrar fishing village mark a landscape once busy with Atlantic trawlers. This sheltered bay serves as the starting point for the ascent into the Hornstrandir highlands.
The trail follows old jeep tracks and wartime funicular lines up through lush valleys, berry slopes, and mountain streams toward the Grænahlíð summit. At the top, the group explores the historic UK Base Darri, including barracks ruins, a generator building, and an Oerlikon 20mm cannon turret.
From the summit, the group approaches the rim of 500-metre vertical sea cliffs where waves break on the rocks far below. Fulmars, Guillemots, Gulls, and Puffins ride the coastal updrafts at close range.
The ridge trail descends gradually to Teistuvatn Lake, a quiet inland water body frequented by Whooper Swans and Kittiwakes. The group pauses here to observe the solar eclipse as the sky shifts and the surrounding wilderness falls under the shadow of the moon.
The hike concludes at Slétta, a sandy beach with a lighthouse where the boat waits for the return journey. The cruise back to Ísafjörður offers further opportunities to spot seals and, conditions permitting, whales along the fjord.
