Don Quixote Tour: La Mancha, Windmills & Medieval Castles
Trace the footsteps of Cervantes across the timeless landscapes of La Mancha
The Don Quixote Tour from Madrid takes you deep into the heart of La Mancha, the legendary region that inspired one of the greatest works in world literature. In a single day, you will visit the village of El Toboso, the iconic windmills of Mota del Cuervo, and the walled town of Belmonte with its commanding medieval castle.
La Mancha is a landscape of wide horizons and whitewashed villages that has changed remarkably little since Miguel de Cervantes set his famous novel here in the early seventeenth century. Travelling through this region with a knowledgeable guide brings the story of Don Quixote and his faithful squire Sancho Panza vividly to life in a way that no book or museum can replicate.
The itinerary balances literary history with genuine cultural discovery, giving you time to walk the streets of ancient settlements, explore the interiors of working windmills, and sit down for a relaxed lunch in a town that has preserved its medieval character for centuries. The pace is easy throughout, making this a comfortable excursion for a wide range of travellers.

Itinerary
The tour departs from Madrid city center with a professional guide. The drive south-east takes you out of the capital and into the broad plains of Castilla-La Mancha, with commentary en route setting the literary and historical scene.
Your first stop is El Toboso, the small village where Aldonza Lorenzo was born. Cervantes transformed her into Dulcinea del Toboso in his novel, making this quiet settlement a place of genuine literary pilgrimage. You will have time to explore the village and absorb its connection to the story.
Next, the group heads to Mota del Cuervo to visit the famous windmills that stand on the ridge above the town. You will be able to enter several of the seven windmills and see the original milling machinery up close, understanding why Cervantes chose them as the setting for one of the most celebrated scenes in European literature.
The walled village of Belmonte provides a atmospheric setting for a free lunch break of approximately one hour and forty-five minutes. The town has a variety of local restaurants where you can sample traditional Castilian cuisine at your own expense.
After lunch, the group visits the Castle of Belmonte, a striking fifteenth-century fortress commissioned by the Marquis of Villena. The castle is considered one of the finest examples of late-medieval military architecture in Spain and has served as a filming location for several major productions.
The group departs Belmonte in the late afternoon and returns to the original meeting point in Madrid city center by early evening. The return journey offers a final opportunity to reflect on the landscapes of La Mancha as they recede into the distance.
