Serra da Estrela — Private Gastronomy & Snow Experience
Granite peaks, artisanal cheese and the highest ground in mainland Portugal — a full day shaped by altitude, culture and seasonal wonder.
Rising above the Beira Interior, Serra da Estrela is mainland Portugal's highest mountain range — a landscape defined by glacial valleys, granite plateaus and centuries of pastoral tradition that persist in villages where stone houses and artisan producers still anchor daily life.
Travelling in a private vehicle, the journey moves through Celorico da Beira, long associated with Serra da Estrela cheese production, before climbing through Seia and into Sabugueiro, the highest village in Portugal. Each stop reveals a mountain region shaped by altitude, time and the enduring rhythms of communities that have lived alongside these peaks for generations.
The route reaches the Serra da Estrela Tower at 1,993 metres, the highest point in mainland Portugal, where in winter months snow transforms the landscape into one of the country's most distinctive seasonal settings. Wide plateaus, glacial formations and the silence of high altitude define this part of the journey.
Throughout the day, optional gastronomy and cultural experiences — including visits to cheesemakers, a Dão wine estate and the Bread Museum — allow each group to shape the experience according to their interests, pace and curiosity.
Tour Highlights
Reach the Torre da Serra da Estrela at 1,993 metres — the highest point in mainland Portugal — where winter snow creates a rare and memorable Alpine atmosphere.
Discover the artisanal world of Serra da Estrela cheese through optional visits to a traditional cheesemaker and the Solar do Queijo in Celorico da Beira.
Walk to Lagoa Comprida and optionally Covão dos Conchos, one of the most distinctive hydraulic engineering landmarks set within a mountain lake.
Explore Sabugueiro, the highest village in Portugal, where granite architecture, local products and the Serra da Estrela Mountain Dog reflect an authentic highland way of life.
Taste four wines from the Dão region at Quinta da Bica, a 17th-century estate rooted in centuries of winemaking tradition on the slopes of the mountain range.
Survey glacial valleys, high-altitude plateaus and, on clear days, the distant Atlantic from viewpoints that reveal the full scale of Serra da Estrela's landscape.
Travel the scenic N338 road between Manteigas and the upper plateau — considered one of the most spectacular mountain routes in Portugal.
Itinerary Overview
The journey enters the Beira Interior at Celorico da Beira, historically the centre of Serra da Estrela cheese production and home to the Solar do Queijo. An optional visit here offers a cultural and historical framework for the cheese traditions that define this mountain region.
In the village of Pinhanços, an optional encounter with one of the last active traditional cheesemakers brings the artisan process to life. Working entirely by hand and following methods passed down since childhood, she represents a living connection to a practice once common across nearly every household in the village.
Seia serves as a gateway to the high mountain, offering views from the former castle site and an optional visit to the Bread Museum, which traces the cultural and social history of bread across Portugal. The route then climbs to Sabugueiro, officially Portugal's highest village, where local products, granite architecture and mountain dogs define the character of the stop.
Lagoa Comprida, the largest water reservoir in Serra da Estrela, sits within an open plateau framed by silence and mountain sky. From here, an optional hike of approximately 5 km leads to Covão dos Conchos, a circular hydraulic tunnel that appears as a natural formation set at the centre of a mountain lake.
The high point of the day in every sense, the Torre is the highest accessible location in mainland Portugal. In winter it hosts the country's only ski resort and is surrounded by snow-covered terrain; outside the cold season, wide glacial views and clear-day sightlines to the Atlantic define the experience.
On the descent, an optional visit to Quinta da Bica introduces the wine heritage of the Dão region through a guided tasting of four wines on a 17th-century estate with origins linked to a former convent. The experience is led by a producer from the family behind the estate.
