Mount Etna South Side Tour from Palermo
A full-day journey to Europe's highest and most active volcano, departing from Palermo.
This full-day excursion takes you from Palermo to the dramatic south side of Mount Etna, where lava fields, ancient forests, and sweeping crater panoramas define one of Sicily's most compelling natural landscapes.
The route winds through chestnut and oak forests before reaching accessible lava flows, giving you an early sense of the volcanic forces that have shaped this region over millennia. Each curve in the road reveals a new layer of the landscape, from dense woodland to raw black lava rock.
At Rifugio Sapienza, set at 1,900 meters above sea level, the tour opens up into free exploration time. Visitors can stroll toward the Silvestri Craters, enjoy a coffee at the refuge, or choose to ascend further by cable car and 4x4 vehicle, weather and volcanic conditions permitting.
The return drive to Palermo takes approximately four hours, rounding out a full immersion in the natural character of eastern Sicily and its most iconic geological landmark.

Itinerary
Meet the tour staff at the designated meeting point in Palermo and board the vehicle for the drive toward eastern Sicily. The journey to Mount Etna takes approximately three and a half hours.
The approach road winds through dense chestnut and oak forests on the south side of the volcano. Along the way, a stop at a notable lava flow offers a first close encounter with the volcano's geological history.
The group reaches Rifugio Sapienza, the main departure point for higher excursions on the south side of Etna. This is where free time begins, allowing visitors to explore at their own pace.
A short walk from the refuge leads to the Silvestri Craters, formed during the 1892 eruption and accessible without additional equipment. Admission fees for the crater area are not included in the tour price.
Visitors who wish to ascend further may purchase cable car tickets directly on site and continue upward by 4x4 vehicle. This optional extension is subject to weather and volcanic activity conditions on the day.
