All in 1 Experience in Madeira: 4x4 Ride, Hiking, Swimming and Boat Trip
One day. Four adventures. The complete Madeira experience from coast to mountain.
This all-in-one Madeira experience combines hiking, ocean swimming, a scenic boat trip, and an off-road 4x4 journey through UNESCO-listed forest into a single, well-paced eight-hour day on the island's dramatic eastern edge.
The day begins at Baía d'Abra, where a four-kilometre trail leads along a basaltic peninsula toward Cais do Sardinha, a secluded landing where the Atlantic opens up on both the north and south coasts simultaneously. After a refreshing swim at the cais, a boat takes guests out to the easternmost tip of Madeira to see the island's first lighthouse, constructed in 1870, before docking at the marina at Quinta do Lorde.
A midday stop in Caniçal offers a chance to try local sandwiches or traditional dishes at a relaxed pace before the afternoon shifts inland. The second half of the tour trades the coast for the highlands, with a 4x4 route threading through the ancient laurisilva forest at Funduras, the lookout at Portela with its views over Porto da Cruz and the imposing Penha d'Aguia, and finally a descent through terraced villages and serpentine roads to Santa Cruz near the airport.

Itinerary
The day begins at the beautiful Baía d'Abra in Caniçal, at the southeastern tip of the island within the municipality of Machico. From here, the four-kilometre trail to Cais do Sardinha sets off across a virgin basaltic peninsula with views of colourful fishing boats and the open Atlantic.
The trail reaches the viewpoint at Ponta do Rosto, where guests can take in one of the finest panoramas on the entire island, looking out across the natural cliffs of both coastlines. The walk concludes at Cais do Sardinha, where a swim in the Atlantic is the reward for the moderate hike.
A boat departs from Caniçal toward the easternmost point of Madeira, passing the historic lighthouse erected in 1870, the first of its kind on the island. The trip continues to the marina at Quinta do Lorde before returning to Caniçal for a midday break with local food options nearby.
The afternoon shifts to the interior, where an off-road 4x4 vehicle takes the group along beaten tracks through the laurisilva forest at Funduras, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of ancient laurel trees and endemic vegetation. The route continues to the Portela lookout with views over Porto da Cruz and Penha d'Aguia.
The route passes through Santo Antonio da Serra, known for its lush vegetation, pleasant highland climate, and traditional agricultural character. Guests travel through local villages and observe the historic terracing systems that have shaped the island's hillside landscape for centuries.
The day concludes with a descent along serpentine roads to Santa Cruz, a coastal town on the eastern side of the island close to Madeira International Airport. The combination of terrain and scenery on the return leg provides a fitting close to a day that has crossed the island's most varied landscapes.
