The Untouched Nature's Hike — Boaventura Levada Trail
A challenging journey through dense forests, deep valleys, and the wild heart of Madeira.
This Boaventura levada hike takes you along one of Madeira's most pristine irrigation channels, deep into a landscape shaped by centuries of water management and untouched woodland. The route combines the calm of forested trails with the physical reward of a genuinely demanding ascent to the island's highest plateau.
Levada walks are central to Madeira's identity, and this route through Boaventura stands apart for its relative solitude. The trail winds through dense laurisilva forest, a UNESCO-recognised ecosystem that has survived largely intact since the Tertiary period.
The descent through deep valleys offers a series of viewpoints that reveal the island's dramatic geological structure. Mossy banks, the sound of running water, and filtered light through the tree canopy define much of the walking experience.
Rated as challenging, this hike is suited to walkers with prior experience on uneven and sometimes narrow terrain. The combination of altitude, distance, and elevation change makes it physically rewarding and mentally absorbing in equal measure.

Itinerary
Guests are collected from their accommodation and transferred by vehicle toward the Boaventura area. The drive itself offers views of Madeira's northern coastline and terraced hillsides.
The group arrives at the highland starting point at approximately 10:30. The guide provides a safety briefing and an introduction to the natural and cultural context of the levada system.
The trail descends from the plateau, following the levada channel through forest corridors, across narrow paths, and along valley edges. This section is the most physically demanding portion of the walk.
A break of approximately 30 minutes is taken at a suitable point along the route. This is an opportunity to rest, take in the surroundings, and have a snack before continuing.
The hike concludes at approximately 15:30. The trail ends near vehicle access, and guests are transported back from the area.
