Northeast Meet the Locals 4x4 Tour — Santana & Caniçal
Explore the villages, valleys, and off-road tracks of Madeira's authentic northeast in an open-top 4x4.
This Madeira northeast 4x4 tour takes you through a side of the island that most visitors never see — a landscape of thatched-roof houses, working rum factories, and hand-built terraces carved into sea cliffs over centuries.
Travelling in an open-top 4x4, you move through native forest, old farming tracks, and off-road paths that link villages where daily life has changed very little over generations. Your multilingual guide shares the history, flora, fauna, and gastronomy of each location as you pass through.
From the dramatic valleys of São Vicente to the eastern tip at Caniçal, the route covers the full breadth of the northeast, pausing at viewpoints that reveal the scale and beauty of Madeira's rugged Atlantic coastline.

An easy-rated full-day tour suitable for most travellers, with no strenuous walking required.
Tour Itinerary
The tour begins on the northwest coast at São Vicente before heading into the quieter inland roads toward Boaventura. This stretch passes through fertile valleys and early examples of the terraced agricultural landscape.
The route continues to Arco de São Jorge and then to Santana, one of Madeira's most distinctive villages. Here you encounter the famous palheiros — traditional triangular thatched houses — alongside local shops and a water mill.
Descending toward the coast, the tour reaches Faial, which offers dramatic views of Penha de Aguia rock, and then Porto da Cruz. The village is home to one of Madeira's last functioning traditional rum factories, where sugar cane is still pressed by ox-driven mills.
The final stop is Caniçal, a former whaling village at the eastern tip of Madeira. The guide provides context on the area's maritime history and the surrounding Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula before the return journey.
