Best of Fogo Island: Hiking & Discovery — 4 Days, 3 Nights
Climb an active volcano, explore a national park inside a caldera, and discover the raw beauty of Cape Verde's most dramatic island.
This four-day adventure on Fogo Island hiking tour takes you from the colonial streets of São Filipe to the summit of Pico do Fogo, Cape Verde's highest peak at 2,829 metres, where an active volcanic cone dominates a landscape unlike anywhere else in the Atlantic. Each day builds in intensity, combining cultural discovery with increasingly demanding trekking across lava fields, ash slopes, and crater ridges. The itinerary is rated challenging and designed for travellers who are physically prepared and curious about one of the world's most compelling volcanic environments.
The journey begins at São Filipe Airport, where a professional driver-guide escorts you through the capital's colonial architecture and on to Salinas, a fishing port where volcanic rock has been shaped by the sea into a natural swimming pool. The afternoon drive through the northern villages of Mosteiros and Achada Furna reveals the lasting imprint of the 1951 eruption before the road climbs into Chã das Caldeiras National Park, a settlement built inside the caldera itself.
On the second and third days, the focus shifts to the volcano. The full ascent of Pico do Fogo rewards hikers with a 360-degree panoramic view above the clouds, followed by a descent through deep lapilli ash that becomes a defining memory of the trip. The third day's hike through the caldera traces the 1995 and 2014 eruption craters, crossing points where lava buried the old cobblestone road and passing the smoking vent of the 2014 cone. The final morning visits a local coffee plantation and Cape Verde's celebrated volcanic wine before the return to São Filipe.

Itinerary
Meet your guide at São Filipe Airport and begin with a walk through the Sobrados colonial quarter and the Municipal Museum. Continue to Salinas for a swim in the natural volcanic pool before lunch, then drive north through Mosteiros, Achada Furna, and Cabeça Fundão to reach Chã das Caldeiras National Park and check in to your accommodation.
Set out on foot from the caldera floor, ascending through orchards of fig, vine, apple, and pear trees before the terrain transitions to open volcanic rock. After approximately three hours of climbing, reach the 2,829 m summit for a panoramic view over the entire island. Walk the crater rim, then descend the steep lapilli ash slope before returning to your accommodation in Chã das Caldeiras. A picnic lunch is included at the summit.
Leave Portela on a marked path through scattered fruit trees and vines, crossing dusty lapilli fields toward the 1995 eruption peak. Ascend to peer into the 2014 smoking crater, cross points where lava buried the cobblestone road, and stop for a picnic before the 45-minute descent back to the hotel. The day covers the caldera's most dramatic recent volcanic features at a more measured pace than the summit ascent.
After check-out, visit a local coffee plantation and taste Cape Verde's celebrated volcanic wine before a final lunch in a local setting. Drive to the village of Forno and then on to São Filipe Airport for the return flight. Transfer to accommodation in São Filipe at Pipi's Guest House is included on the final night if the flight schedule requires it.
