Fimmvorduhals Private Day Hike: Skógar to Thorsmork
A demanding 25-kilometer traverse through volcanic craters, glaciers, and one of Iceland's most celebrated highland trails.
The Fimmvörðuháls hike connects the iconic Skógarfoss waterfall to the wilderness of Þórsmörk valley, leading hikers through a raw and geologically active landscape shaped by centuries of volcanic forces.
The trail begins beside the roaring 60-meter Skógarfoss waterfall and follows the Skógá River upstream, passing a remarkable sequence of waterfalls before ascending to the high pass between the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers. The air becomes crisper and the scenery more dramatic with every step.
At the pass, the trail crosses the lava field created during the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption and traverses the two volcanic craters, Móði and Magni. This section offers a rare opportunity to walk directly across recently formed geological structures that reshaped the landscape in living memory.
The descent into Þórsmörk reveals sweeping views of glacier valleys, volcanic peaks, and the braided Markarfljót floodplain. A Super-Jeep guide meets the group at Þórsmörk and returns travelers to Skógar via Gígjökull glacier and the celebrated Seljalandsfoss waterfall.

Itinerary
The hike begins at the base of Skógarfoss, one of Iceland's most recognizable waterfalls at 60 meters tall. The trail ascends alongside the waterfall and joins the Skógá River valley heading inland.
The route follows the Skógá River upstream through a corridor of smaller waterfalls, each with its own character. The landscape transitions from coastal lowlands to rugged highland terrain.
The trail climbs to the Fimmvörðuháls mountain pass, situated between Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers. At this elevation, hikers cross the 2010 lava field and visit the craters Móði and Magni.
From the pass, the trail descends steeply into the sheltered valley of Þórsmörk. Views of glaciers, highland ridges, and the Markarfljót floodplain open up during the descent.
At the valley floor, the group meets the Super-Jeep guide for the return journey. The drive passes through Þórsmörk's rugged terrain and along the Markarfljót floodplain.
Before completing the circuit, the route stops at Seljalandsfoss, a waterfall visitors can walk behind. The group then returns to the starting point at Skógar.
