Dry Canyoning on Monte San Giovanni, Gonnesa
Descend ancient rock channels above the Sardinian coast with rope, harness, and a guide who knows every hold.
Dry canyoning on Monte San Giovanni takes participants through a natural canyon system carved into the limestone hills above Gonnesa, combining technical abseils, scrambling, and careful footwork across four hours of structured outdoor activity.
The route involves a 40-minute approach on foot before the technical section begins, giving participants time to acclimatise to the terrain and receive a full safety briefing from the guide. Six abseils punctuate the descent, with the longest dropping 30 metres down a sheer rock face overlooking the surrounding landscape.
The overall height difference of 200 metres means the experience feels genuinely committing without being extreme, placing it firmly in the moderate category suitable for people with a reasonable level of fitness and a calm head for heights. All technical equipment including helmet, ropes, and harness is provided as part of the activity.
The return journey takes approximately 10 minutes along an established path, making the overall logistics straightforward and leaving time to reflect on the descent before heading back.

Itinerary
Participants gather at the meeting point in Gonnesa where the guide distributes and fits helmets, harnesses, and ropes. A safety briefing covers abseil technique, communication signals, and canyon protocols before setting off.
The group walks approximately 40 minutes through the natural landscape to reach the canyon entrance. The approach follows a defined trail and allows participants to warm up and take in the broader surroundings of the Sulcis area.
The technical descent begins with the first of six abseils, progressing through increasingly open sections of the canyon. The guide leads each pitch, positioning at the bottom to assist and observe each participant's technique.
The longest abseil of the route descends a clean 30-metre vertical face, the centrepiece of the experience. Participants are secured on a guided rope system throughout, with the guide offering real-time instruction from anchor to base.
The remaining pitches complete the descent, bringing the group to the base of the canyon system. Equipment is collected and secured before the group moves toward the return path.
A short 10-minute walk returns the group to the starting area, completing the circuit. This final section allows time for the guide to debrief the experience and answer any questions.
