The Best of the Calanques in 3 Days
Hike, discover, and breathe in the wild landscapes of Marseille and Cassis
This three-day journey through the Calanques National Park takes you along dramatic coastal cliffs, through fragrant Mediterranean scrubland, and into the heart of one of France's most celebrated natural landscapes. Starting from the Luminy campus at the gateway to the park, you will explore viewpoints, hidden creeks, and seaside villages at a pace that balances discovery with genuine rest.
Each day is structured around a different entry point into the park, offering varied terrain and perspectives. From the heights of the goat pass at 320 metres to the calm waters of Callelongue, the route covers geology, ecology, and local human history in equal measure.
The tour also connects the natural environment with the urban and cultural fabric of Marseille and Cassis. A commented van ride through Marseille, a stop at an organic wine estate, and time at Cap Canaille, the highest sea cliff in Europe, round out an itinerary that is as culturally rich as it is physically rewarding.

Itinerary
The tour begins at the Luminy campus of Aix-Marseille University, the largest university in France, located at the entrance to the Calanques National Park. The group sets off on foot to discover the viewpoint overlooking the creeks, then visits the Calanques of Saint John of God and Sugiton. These sites offer sweeping panoramic views and a rich variety of Mediterranean plant life, with time built in for photography and a picnic.
Departing from Marseille, a commented van ride covers the city's history, modernisation, religious buildings, and distinctive villas before passing the Velodrome, the Radiant City of Le Corbusier, and the university. The route joins the Route de la Gineste with several stops for photography and views over the city and its surroundings.
Morning options include a long hike to Calanque d'En Vau, a shorter hike to Port Pin, a boat excursion through the national park, or time in Cassis town. After a meal break, the group visits an organic Cassis wine estate or tastes local wines. Optional snorkeling, kayak, or a visit to La Ciotat precede a final stop at Cap Canaille, the highest sea cliff in Europe.
The final day begins in Pastré Park, an emblematic green space in Marseille, where the guide presents the park's characteristic tree species. The group ascends to the goat pass at 320 metres for a picnic and one of the finest panoramic views of Marseille, the Calanques, and the sea. The descent passes through geological faults, caves, and changing vegetation, arriving at Callelongue for a rest and, for those who wish, a swim.
