Delphi and Meteora 2-Day Tour from Athens
Ancient oracle sanctuaries, sky-high monasteries, and legendary battlefields in a single unforgettable journey through central Greece.
The 2-day Delphi and Meteora tour from Athens brings together two of Greece's most iconic destinations, pairing the sacred ruins of Apollo's oracle with the gravity-defying monasteries perched atop the sandstone pillars of Thessaly. This guided small-group experience covers roughly 500 kilometers of Greek landscape, from the fertile plains of Boeotia to the towering cliffs of Kalambaka.
The itinerary is designed to be accessible for travelers of all fitness levels, with a difficulty rating of easy. Transportation is provided throughout in an air-conditioned minibus, and professional guides lead every site visit. Accommodation and dinner on the first night, along with breakfast on the second morning, are included in the package.
Beyond the headline sites, the route passes through historically significant towns including Arachova, Lamia, and Trikala, and includes a stop at the monument to King Leonidas I at Thermopylae on the return leg. The journey concludes back in Athens by early evening on day two.
Tour Highlights
Guided visit to the ancient Sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi, once regarded as the center of the ancient world and home to the celebrated oracle consulted by kings across the Mediterranean.
Walk the Sacred Way, passing votive offerings from city-states across the ancient Greek world, leading up to the Temple of Apollo on the slopes of Mount Parnassus.
Explore the ancient theater at Delphi, which once held 5,000 spectators for dramatic performances, poetry contests, and religious festivals honoring Apollo.
Witness the dramatic sandstone pillars of Meteora, geological formations that began taking shape beneath an ancient sea roughly thirty million years ago.
Visit two active monasteries at Meteora, including Megalo Meteoro, the oldest abbey in the complex, founded by the monk Athanasius after his departure from Mount Athos.
Stop at Thermopylae to view the statue of Spartan King Leonidas I, commemorating the famous battle of 480 B.C. where a small Greek force held off the Persian army.
Overnight stay in Kalambaka, the quiet town at the foot of the Meteora cliffs, allowing travelers to experience the landscape in the calm of the evening.
Itinerary
Hotel pickup from the Athens city center marks the start of the journey. The minibus travels northwest via the national highway, passing through Thebes and Levadia before reaching the mountain village of Arachova on the slopes of Parnassus for a brief rest stop.
Arriving around midday, the group spends several hours exploring the archaeological site of Delphi with a professional guide. Key stops include the Sacred Way, the Temple of Apollo, the ancient theater, and the stadium that hosted the Pythian Games, the forerunner to the modern Olympic competition.
After the Delphi visit, the group travels north through Lamia and Trikala to reach Kalambaka. Dinner and overnight accommodation are provided in this town, situated directly beneath the towering rock formations of Meteora.
Following breakfast at the hotel, the tour proceeds to Meteora for a guided visit to two of the six active monasteries. Megalo Meteoro is the standard first stop, with St. Stephen's Monastery typically following. Visitors should dress according to the monastery dress code, with coverings available at the entrance.
On the drive south, the group stops at Thermopylae to view the bronze statue of Leonidas I, marking the site of the 480 B.C. battle. The minibus returns to the original Athens departure point at approximately 7 pm, completing the two-day circuit.
