Islamic and Christian Cairo Day Tour
Walk through centuries of faith across the mosques, churches, and synagogues that define historic Cairo.
This Islamic and Christian Cairo day tour guides you through two of the Egyptian capital's most historically layered districts in a single, well-paced six-hour journey. From Coptic sanctuaries sheltering memories of the Holy Family to Ottoman mosques crowning the city's skyline, Cairo's spiritual heritage unfolds at every turn. Lunch at a local restaurant is included, giving you a genuine taste of everyday Egyptian life.
Old Cairo, also known as Coptic Cairo, holds some of the earliest Christian monuments on the African continent. The Church of Abu Serga, believed to stand above the cave where the Holy Family sought refuge, draws pilgrims from Egypt and across the world. Nearby, the Hanging Church — named for its nave suspended over a Roman gatehouse — and the Ben Ezra Synagogue complete a compact yet profound circuit of Abrahamic heritage within the walls of the ancient Babylon Fortress.
The tour then ascends to the Citadel of Cairo, where the Mohamed Ali Mosque — the Alabaster Mosque — dominates the horizon. Built between 1830 and 1848, it remains the defining landmark of the city's Ottoman period. The final stretch leads through El Moez Street and El Darb El Asfar, the oldest continuously inhabited quarter of Islamic Cairo, where medieval mosques, schools, and caravanserais line both sides of one of Egypt's most storied thoroughfares.
The route through Islamic Cairo takes in a concentration of Mamluk and Fatimid monuments rarely matched elsewhere in the world. Barquq Mosque and School, El Aqmar Mosque, the Mosque of El Saleh Tala, the Blue Mosque, and the Dome and Hospital of Qalawoon are among the landmarks encountered as you pass through Bab El Fetouh and Bab El Nasr, the ancient northern gates that once guarded the medieval city.

Itinerary
Your guide meets you at your Cairo hotel and transfers you to Old Cairo, also called Coptic Cairo, one of the key stopping points of the Holy Family during their time in Egypt. The area retains a strong atmosphere of devotion that draws Christian pilgrims from around the world.
You enter the Church of Abu Serga (St. Sergious), which tradition holds was built above the cave where the Holy Family sheltered. From there you visit the Church of St. Barbara and the Hanging Church, whose nave sits suspended over a Roman-era gatehouse and is approached by twenty-nine steps.
The circuit of Coptic Cairo continues with the Ben Ezra Synagogue, one of the oldest Jewish places of worship on the continent. After completing the Old Cairo visit, you stop for lunch at a local restaurant before continuing to the next district.
You travel to the Citadel of Cairo, the medieval fortified complex built by Saladin, where the Mohamed Ali Mosque commands panoramic views over the city. Commissioned between 1830 and 1848, the mosque's alabaster-clad interior and twin minarets are central to Cairo's architectural identity.
The tour moves to the northern quarter of Islamic Cairo, where you visit Barquq Mosque and School, El Aqmar Mosque, the Mosque of El Saleh Tala, the Blue Mosque, and the Dome, Hospital, and School of Qalawoon. These structures represent the full sweep of Mamluk and Fatimid religious architecture.
The day concludes with a walk along El Moez Le Din Allah Street, passing the medieval gates of Bab El Fetouh and Bab El Nasr, before your guide returns you to your hotel.
