Trekking to the Sella del Diavolo: History, Nature and Panoramic Views
A walk through Mediterranean landscapes to one of Cagliari's most iconic hilltop promontories
The Sella del Diavolo trekking tour brings you to the summit of one of Cagliari's most celebrated natural landmarks, where sweeping views over the Gulf of Angels meet layers of history stretching back to ancient Phoenician and Roman times. Guided by local experts, this accessible walk covers 3 km across varied terrain that rewards every step with scenery and storytelling.
The route winds through the characteristic Mediterranean scrubland, where seasonal scents and colors shift with the time of year. Rocky paths lined with wild herbs and low coastal vegetation lead upward at a gentle pace, making the experience suitable for a wide range of fitness levels and ages.
At the summit, the landscape opens dramatically to reveal the broad arc of the Gulf of Angels stretching along the Sardinian coastline. The sense of arrival at the top is heightened by the concentration of historical remains found there, each one representing a different chapter in the long human story of this promontory.
The descent follows the same trail in reverse, allowing time to notice details that may have passed unobserved on the way up, and to ask questions of your guide as the coastal light changes across the afternoon.

Itinerary
Guests meet the local guide at the designated Cagliari meeting point. A minibus transfer of approximately 15 minutes brings the group to the trailhead at the base of the promontory.
The walk begins on a clearly marked path through low coastal vegetation. The guide introduces the seasonal plants, local ecology, and the broader history of Cagliari as the group climbs steadily upward.
En route to the summit, the group passes a Roman cistern and a Punic cistern, stopping to learn about ancient hydraulic engineering and the successive civilizations that occupied this strategic hilltop.
At the top of the Sella del Diavolo, the guide walks the group through the remains of the Phoenician-Punic temple of Astarte, the ruins of the Tower of Sant'Elia, and the preserved structure of a Second World War fortification. Views over the Gulf of Angels are at their finest from this vantage point.
