Appian Way and Caffarella Valley: Nature, Culture and Gastronomy
Walk ancient Roman roads, explore a green valley oasis, and share a traditional Italian picnic under open skies.
This five-hour guided experience takes you deep into the Appian Way Regional Park, where layers of Roman history meet unspoiled nature and authentic local food culture. You will walk paths that Roman legions once marched, visit well-preserved archaeological sites, and conclude with a relaxed al fresco meal in true Italian style.
The route moves through two distinct environments: the ecological richness of the Caffarella Valley and the monumental heritage of the Via Appia Antica. Both areas sit within Rome's largest urban protected park, yet feel worlds away from the city's tourist crowds.
Your guide connects the geological, historical, and cultural threads running through this landscape, making the experience accessible and engaging for curious travelers of all backgrounds. The difficulty level is easy, making it suitable for most fitness levels.
The experience closes with a traditional Italian picnic featuring wine, cheese, salami, and seasonal finger food, chosen and enjoyed at a shaded spot selected by the group together.

Itinerary
The tour begins inside the Caffarella Valley, a protected green area where ancient monuments, farmhouses, woodlands, and ponds coexist within a single rural landscape. Your guide introduces the valley's ecological structure and its significance as one of Rome's most important natural reserves.
You join the Via Appia Antica, one of the earliest and most strategically important roads of the ancient Roman republic, originally connecting Rome to Brindisi in southeast Italy. Walking on its original basalt paving gives an immediate sense of the scale and ambition of Roman engineering.
Between the second and third mile markers, the archaeological complex of Emperor Maxentius comes into view, comprising a palace, a circus, and a dynastic mausoleum. The three buildings were designed to follow the natural contours of the land, minimizing excavation while creating a coherent imperial estate.
At Capo di Bove, you visit the remains of a Roman thermal bath complex featuring a caldarium, tepidarium, and frigidarium, alongside high-quality floor mosaics that point to an originally elegant environment. A converted farmhouse on site hosts a photographic exhibition of the Appian Way as it appeared in the first half of the twentieth century.
Returning toward the meeting point, the group selects a shaded spot to enjoy a traditional Italian-style outdoor meal. Wine, local cheeses, salami, and finger food are shared in a relaxed setting that reflects the everyday food culture of Rome.
