Explore Istria and Dalmatia in 8 Days, Self-Drive
Eight days of coastal drives, ancient ruins, and lakeside trails across Croatia's most celebrated regions.
This Croatia self-drive tour through Istria and Dalmatia traces a compelling route from Pula's Roman legacy to the turquoise cascades of Plitvice Lakes, passing through the vibrant city of Split and the charming coastal town of Poreč. Designed for independent travellers, the itinerary combines cultural depth with natural beauty at a very easy pace. A rental car awaits you at Pula Airport, and a local representative ensures a smooth start to your journey.
The Dalmatian coast carries centuries of layered history — Greek, Roman, Venetian, and Austro-Hungarian influences visible in every stone facade and harbour promenade. Cities like Zadar, Šibenik, and Split reward curious travellers with architectural richness and lively waterfront culture. Each stop along the coastal road offers a distinct character, making the drive itself part of the experience.
Inland, the UNESCO-listed Plitvice Lakes National Park offers one of Europe's most extraordinary natural landscapes, where sixteen terraced lakes are connected by a series of waterfalls amid dense forest. The return leg through Istria brings a quieter, more pastoral atmosphere, with rolling vineyards, truffle country, and the Adriatic stretching westward. The itinerary closes in Pula, where ancient Roman monuments stand in daily use by a modern city.
Optional guided excursions are available at key stops, including Pula, Opatija, Zadar, Split, Krka National Park, Plitvice, Poreč, and Rovinj, allowing travellers to tailor the depth of each visit. The self-drive format provides flexibility to linger at scenic viewpoints or explore villages off the main route. Accommodation is included at each overnight destination, with breakfast provided daily.
