5-Day Small Group Journey Around Iceland
Circle Iceland's most iconic landscapes, glaciers, and geothermal wonders in five expertly guided days.
This Iceland Ring Road small group tour takes you across five days of extraordinary scenery, from North Iceland's volcanic lakeshores to the glittering icebergs of the southeast coast. Led by knowledgeable local guides and based in hand-selected hotels, every stage of the route is designed to connect you with Iceland's most remarkable natural and cultural landmarks. With a maximum of 25 participants, the experience remains personal, spacious, and genuinely immersive.
Snæland Travel, founded in 1945, brings decades of operational expertise to every departure. Their drivers are trained for Iceland's unique road conditions, and the full-sized coach ensures comfort and unrestricted luggage throughout the journey.
From the turf farmhouses of Skagafjörður to the basalt columns of Reynisfjara, the itinerary balances iconic sights with quieter, lesser-visited corners of the island. Optional experiences, including the Forest Lagoon geothermal spa, a Glacier Jeep excursion on Vatnajökull, and the Blue Lagoon, allow guests to personalise their adventure without disrupting the group schedule.
The route follows the Ring Road in a logical arc, covering North Iceland, the East Fjords, the South Coast, and the Golden Circle in sequence. Accommodation is selected for quality and location in each region, ensuring rest between active days of exploration.
Tour Highlights
Visit Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and join an amphibian boat tour among icebergs calving from Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier, then walk Diamond Beach where icebergs rest on black volcanic sand.
Explore the Geysir Geothermal Area, where Strokkur erupts every few minutes, and witness the two-tiered cascade of Gullfoss plunging into a rugged canyon on the Golden Circle.
Stand at Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates visibly drift apart and the world's oldest parliament met in 930 AD.
Discover the steaming geothermal fields of Námaskarð, the lava formations of Dimmuborgir, and the pseudocraters of Skútustaðagígar around the birdlife-rich shores of Lake Mývatn.
Travel through the East Fjords, a region of narrow fjords and fishing villages where wild reindeer roam, and optionally join a Glacier Jeep excursion onto Europe's largest glacier, Vatnajökull.
Photograph Seljalandsfoss from behind the waterfall and admire the 60-metre drop of Skógafoss on Iceland's dramatic South Coast, along with the sea arch at Dyrhólaey.
Tour the Glaumbær turf farmhouse museum in Skagafjörður for a grounded look at traditional Icelandic rural life before arriving in Akureyri, the cultural capital of North Iceland.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Departing Reykjavík, the route passes through Borgarnes and on to Skagafjörður Fjord, celebrated as the heartland of the Icelandic horse. A stop at the Glaumbær turf farmhouse museum provides insight into centuries of Icelandic rural heritage before crossing the Öxnadalsheiði mountain plateau. The evening offers an optional visit to the Forest Lagoon geothermal spa near Akureyri.
The day opens at Goðafoss, the Waterfall of the Gods, before continuing to Lake Mývatn's volcanic surroundings: Dimmuborgir lava formations, Skútustaðagígar pseudocraters, and the Grjótagjá lava cave with its naturally heated spring. The steaming mud pools of Námaskarð are followed by a stop at Dettifoss, one of Europe's most powerful waterfalls, before the night is spent in Egilsstaðir.
The drive through the East Fjords passes narrow inlets, steep mountainsides, and traditional fishing villages that see little mass tourism. This is the only area in Iceland where wild reindeer move freely across the landscape. An optional Glacier Jeep Adventure on Vatnajökull is available in the afternoon, with the night based in Höfn, a small town known for its harbour and lobster.
An amphibian boat tour among floating icebergs at Jökulsárlón sets the tone for the day, followed by a walk on Diamond Beach. The route continues through Vatnajökull National Park past Iceland's highest peak, across the lava fields of Eldhraun, and into Vík where Reynisfjara's basalt columns and puffin colonies await. The day closes with stops at Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss before an overnight near Selfoss.
The final morning covers the Golden Circle: Gullfoss Waterfall, the Geysir Geothermal Area with its erupting Strokkur geyser, and Þingvellir National Park where tectonic plates meet and Iceland's ancient parliament was founded. Guests return to Reykjavík in the afternoon, with an optional Blue Lagoon visit available including transfer, entrance, silica mud mask, towel, and one drink.
