2-Day Tour: Busselton Jetty, Ngilgi Cave and Valley of the Giants
From the depths of an underwater observatory to the canopy of ancient tingle forests
This South West Western Australia tour takes you on a two-day journey through some of the region's most remarkable natural and geological landmarks, guided by an experienced local driver who knows the landscape intimately. Stops for photography and scenic detours are built into the pace of the trip, reflecting a flexible approach to exploration rather than a rigid itinerary.
On day one, the route heads south from Perth toward the coast, where Busselton Jetty stretches nearly two kilometres into Geographe Bay. A heritage train carries you to the end of the structure, where an underwater observatory reveals the marine life colonising the jetty's timber pylons over more than a century.
The afternoon shifts underground at Ngilgi Cave near Yallingup, a limestone cavern with two distinct chambers filled with stalactite and stalagmite formations. The cave carries significance in Wardandi Noongar culture, and guides share the Aboriginal legends associated with this remarkable site. The group then travels inland to Manjimup for an overnight stay before the second day's forest experiences.
Day two centres on the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk near Walpole-Nornalup, where a steel walkway rises forty metres above the forest floor through a canopy of ancient red tingle trees. These trees, found only in a small coastal region of south-western Australia, are among the largest living organisms on the continent. The return journey to Perth follows a scenic route through Denmark, offering a final glimpse of the South West's varied landscapes.

Itinerary
Departing Perth, the group travels south to Busselton, boarding the jetty train for the journey to the end of the 1.8-kilometre structure. The underwater observatory at the jetty's end provides a close view of the coral and marine life that has established itself around the historic pylons.
After returning from the observatory by train, the group has time for lunch in Busselton at a venue of their choosing. This break allows time to explore the foreshore area before the afternoon drive toward the Margaret River region.
The group arrives at Ngilgi Cave in the early afternoon for a guided passage through the cave's two decorated chambers. Visitors hear about the geological formations as well as the cultural significance of the cave to the Wardandi Noongar people before continuing inland to Manjimup for the overnight stop.
Leaving Manjimup after breakfast, the group reaches the Valley of the Giants in the Walpole-Nornalup National Park. Approximately two hours are allocated to walk the elevated steel walkway that winds through the canopy of red tingle and karri trees, offering views unavailable from the forest floor.
After the tree top walk, the route continues to the town of Denmark for a lunch stop before the scenic five-hour return drive to Perth. The journey passes through varied South West landscapes, providing a gradual transition from the remote forest country back to the city.
