Iceland Self-Drive Tour
Iceland Grand Tour: 12-Day Self-Drive Ring Road Adventure
Glaciers, fjords, geysers, and volcanic landscapes on your own terms across the full breadth of Iceland.
This Iceland Grand Tour self-drive takes you on a 12-day journey across one of the world's most dramatic landscapes, from the black sand beaches of the South Shore to the remote East Fjords, the volcanic shores of Lake Mývatn, the cultural hub of Akureyri, the mythical Snæfellsnes Peninsula, and back through the iconic Golden Circle. You set the pace, with a rental car and a carefully curated route waiting for you at Keflavík Airport.
Covering roughly 2,600 kilometres of Iceland's most celebrated roads, this itinerary balances well-known landmarks with quieter detours that most visitors never reach. You will stand before Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon as icebergs drift silently toward the sea, walk behind the curtain of Seljalandsfoss, and watch Strokkur launch boiling water skyward in the Haukadalur valley.
The route threads through Vatnajökull National Park, where Europe's largest glacier spills down toward the coast, and continues north through the serpentine roads of the East Fjords to reach Húsavík, Iceland's premier whale watching port. Cultural stops at Þingvellir National Park, the medieval site of Reykholt, and the artistic town of Seyðisfjörður add historical depth to a journey defined by raw natural spectacle.
Accommodation ranges from characterful guesthouses (Classic category) to the best available hotels in each region (Quality category), giving you flexibility to match the experience to your travel style. The tour runs from April through October, when roads are accessible and Iceland's landscapes are at their most vivid.

Itinerary Overview
Collect your rental car at Keflavík Airport and drive through the moss-covered lava fields of the Reykjanes Peninsula before settling into Reykjavík for your first night. The drive covers approximately 50 km and gives an immediate introduction to Iceland's volcanic character.
Drive east along the South Coast past Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Dyrhólaey, and Reynisfjara black sand beach before overnighting near Vík. Continue the following day through Vatnajökull National Park, Skaftafell, Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, and Diamond Beach to reach the lobster town of Höfn.
Follow the serpentine coastal roads of the East Fjords through Djúpivogur and Fáskrúðsfjörður to reach Egilsstaðir. Spend a full second day exploring Seyðisfjörður, Bakkagerði, the Hengifoss waterfall hike, the monastery ruins at Skriðuklaustur, and the floating pools of the Vök Baths.
Head north to Dettifoss, Europe's most powerful waterfall, and the horseshoe canyon of Ásbyrgi before continuing to Húsavík for a whale watching excursion. Base yourself at Lake Mývatn for two nights to explore Krafla, Námaskarð, Hverfjall crater, Dimmuborgir lava formations, and the Skútustaðagígar pseudo craters.
Visit Goðafoss waterfall and spend time in Akureyri exploring its botanical garden, church, and waterfront before driving west through the horse-breeding valley of Skagafjörður. Continue south through Borgarfjörður the next day to discover Reykholt, Deildartunguhver hot spring, Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls, and the Settlement Centre in Borgarnes.
Circumnavigate the Snæfellsnes Peninsula taking in Gerðuberg columns, Ytri Tunga seal beach, Snæfellsjökull National Park, Djúpalónssandur, and Kirkjufell mountain.
