          Franeker is a historic city in the province of Friesland in northern Netherlands.           Franeker is a small historic city located in the western part of the Dutch province of Friesland, approximately 25 kilometers west of the provincial capital Leeuwarden. It was home to one of the oldest universities in the Netherlands, operating from 1585 to 1811, and is internationally recognized as the site of the Eise Eisinga Planetarium, a UNESCO-listed monument and the world's oldest functioning orrery. The city is also one of eleven historic Frisian towns on the route of the Elfstedentocht ice skating race and serves as the traditional center of the ancient Frisian sport of kaatsen.
