          Thermopylae is a mountain pass in central Greece, famous for the 480 BCE battle where Greek forces held off a Persian army.           Thermopylae is a narrow coastal pass in the Phthiotis regional unit of central Greece, located approximately 180 km north of Athens along the E75 national road. Historically significant as the site of the 480 BC battle between a small Greek allied force and the Persian army of Xerxes I, the area today encompasses outdoor monuments, a modern museum opened in 2020, active sulfurous hot springs, and Kolonos Hill burial mound. The surrounding region includes the spa town of Kamena Vourla, the city of Lamia, and access routes toward Delphi and Mount Oeta National Park.
