Hunan is a province in central China, located south of the Yangtze River in the Yangtze-Huai region. Known for its dramatic landscape, Hunan features the Zhangjiajie mountain peaks, which inspired Avatar's visual design, and the ancient Fenghuang Town with its well-preserved Ming and Qing architecture. Hunan is a landlocked province in south-central China covering approximately 211,800 square kilometers, with a population of around 66 million. It borders Hubei to the north, Jiangxi to the east, Guangdong and Guangxi to the south, Guizhou to the west, and Chongqing municipality to the northwest. The province is geographically characterized by mountainous terrain in the west and south, a broad lake plain around Dongting Lake in the north, and river valleys cut by the Xiang, Zi, Yuan, and Li rivers. Changsha, the provincial capital, sits at the center of these waterways and serves as the administrative, economic, and cultural heart of the region. Hunan holds UNESCO World Heritage status at Wulingyuan Scenic Area and is recognized for biodiversity, intangible cultural heritage linked to Miao and Tujia ethnic minority communities, and its outsized role in 20th-century Chinese political history as the birthplace of Mao Zedong.
