Sintra And Cascais – Departing from Lisbon, we will head towards the rippling and dewy Sintra.
Our day will start with a visit to the incredible Pena Palace (entrance fee included; €14 per person). The palace’s history began in the Middle Ages with a chapel built on the hill above Sintra dedicated to Our Lady of Pena. According to tradition, construction occurred after an apparition of the Virgin Mary, though it was destroyed in the earthquake of 1755.
In 1839, King Ferdinand II bought the ruins of the Hieronymite Monastery of Our Lady of Pena and adapted it to his romantic taste, creating the current palace. Today, the palace is one of the world’s foremost examples of 19th-century romanticism.
Next, you will be ready to explore the unique Sintra village, a UNESCO world heritage site since 1995. You’ll have free time to explore the village, named the “Mountain of the Moon” by the Greeks. It’s a true fairy tale village with Muslim influences.
Here you will have free time for lunch (lunch costs are not included). Additionally, you can try the famous travesseiros, light puff pastries filled with almond-and-egg-yolk cream and dusted with sugar. They are made by turning, rolling, and folding the pastry seven times. Alternatively, you can taste the Sintra cheesecakes, which were a form of rent payment in the XIII century. The first references to these famous cheesecakes date back to that time.
Next, it is time to cross the mystic mountain of Sintra towards the Atlantic Ocean. Along the way, you will have the opportunity to see the quaint Colares village and to learn more about local wines dating to the 13th century. You’ll also see Praia das Maçãs, a small and popular local beach.
Reaching the coast, we will make a stop in one of the most picturesque seaside towns, Azenhas do Mar, which has a stunning view overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
It’s time to leave the beautiful and magical Sintra Mountain and head towards Cascais. However, we’ll make a midpoint stop at the wild Cabo da Roca. It is a 150m cliff that forms the westernmost point of continental Europe.
Next, we’ll visit Cascais, a former fishing village that became a resort for Portugal’s royal family in the late XIX and early XX centuries. Today, it is a popular vacation spot for both Portuguese and foreign tourists and has small museums, picturesque gardens, a shiny marina, and a pedestrianized old town.
While here, we’ll taste Portugal’s most famous ice cream, Santini’s Gelati. You might think it’s the world’s best. It is truly a gift from the gods! Santini’s has been tantalizing Portuguese tongues since 1949.
Finally, it is time to go back to Lisbon, our city that is always near the sea.
