Seine-et-Marne is the largest department (77) of the Ile-de-France region, covering approximately 5,915 square kilometers in the southeastern Paris basin. It encompasses two UNESCO World Heritage Sites (Fontainebleau Palace and Provins), the 25,000-hectare Forest of Fontainebleau, and the historic Brie agricultural plateau. The department borders seven other departments and one Belgian province equivalent, and its prefecture is the town of Melun on the Seine River.
