Metz is the prefecture of the Moselle department in the Grand Est region of northeastern France, situated at the confluence of the Moselle and Seille rivers. Historically a Roman settlement and later capital of the Lorraine region, the city carries significant Franco-German cultural heritage from periods of German annexation between 1871 and 1918. Its position near the borders of Luxembourg, Germany, and Belgium makes it a natural crossroads destination in the heart of western Europe.
