Brighton is a coastal city in East Sussex, England, located approximately 85 kilometres south of central London on the English Channel. Administratively merged with the neighbouring city of Hove, it forms the City of Brighton and Hove, a unitary authority granted city status in 2000. The city is bordered to the north by the South Downs National Park, which begins at the urban fringe. Its position on the south coast made it a fashionable Regency resort and it remains one of the most visited destinations in England outside London.
