Aosta Valley (Valle d'Aosta) is an autonomous region in northwestern Italy bordering France and Switzerland, centered on the Dora Baltea river valley at the foot of the Western Alps. The regional capital, Aosta, was founded as the Roman Augusta Praetoria in 25 BC and retains some of the finest Roman monuments north of Rome. The region holds official bilingual status in Italian and French and covers approximately 3,263 square kilometres, making it the smallest and least populous region in Italy.
