Valkenburg aan de Geul is a municipality in the province of Limburg in the southern Netherlands, situated in the Geul river valley approximately 10 kilometres east of Maastricht and close to the Belgian and German borders. The town is notable for its soft marl limestone geology, which has produced an extensive network of underground tunnels and cave systems, and for its position within one of the few genuinely hilly landscapes in the Netherlands.
