Reunion is a French overseas department and integral part of the European Union located in the southwestern Indian Ocean, approximately 700 kilometres east of Madagascar and 180 kilometres southwest of Mauritius. Its interior, comprising three ancient calderas and an active shield volcano, is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the designation Pitons, Cirques and Remparts of Reunion Island. The island's population of approximately 900,000 reflects centuries of migration from Africa, India, China, and metropolitan France, producing a Creole culture that permeates its cuisine, architecture, and festivals.
