Doubs is a department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of eastern France, bordered by Switzerland to the east. Its landscape ranges from the limestone plateaus and river gorges of the Jura to the open meadows of the Haut-Doubs. The Doubs River gives the department its name and defines much of its character, carving dramatic loops and gorges through the terrain. Besançon, the departmental capital, sits within a near-perfect oxbow of the river and serves as the cultural and transport gateway to the region.
