Ortona is a port city in the Abruzzo region of central-eastern Italy, situated on the Adriatic coast approximately 30 kilometres south-east of Pescara. It is administratively part of the Province of Chieti and sits at the junction of the coastal Via Verde cycle route and the inland road network connecting the Adriatic shore to the Majella National Park. The city gained international historical significance through the December 1943 urban battle between Canadian and German forces, and remains a site of active pilgrimage due to the relics of the Apostle Thomas housed in its cathedral.
