Neuchatel is the capital of the Swiss canton of the same name, situated on the northwestern shore of Lake Neuchatel at an elevation of approximately 430 meters. It lies within the French-speaking region of Switzerland known as Romandy, bordered by the Jura mountains to the north and the lake to the south. The city serves as an academic, cultural, and administrative center for the canton, home to the University of Neuchatel founded in 1838.
