Mahon (Mao in Catalan) is the capital city of Menorca, the easternmost of Spain's Balearic Islands, located in the western Mediterranean Sea. The city sits at the head of one of the longest and deepest natural harbours in the Mediterranean, a geographic feature that made it a contested strategic asset for the Ottoman Empire, the Crown of Aragon, the British, and the French across several centuries. It is designated part of the Menorca Biosphere Reserve, recognised by UNESCO in 1993.
