Veria (Greek: Βέροια) is the capital of the Imathia regional unit in Central Macedonia, northern Greece, situated at approximately 187 metres elevation on the eastern foothills of Mount Vermio, roughly 75 kilometres west of Thessaloniki. The city has been continuously inhabited since antiquity, serving successively as a Macedonian royal city, a major early Christian centre referenced in the New Testament Acts of the Apostles, a Byzantine episcopal seat, and an Ottoman provincial town with a significant Sephardic Jewish population. Its concentration of over 40 Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches within city limits reflects this layered religious and cultural history. Content is based on established geographic, historical, and travel knowledge of the Imathia region as of 2025.
