Pau is the prefecture of the Pyrenees-Atlantiques department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of southwestern France. Situated on a bluff above the Gave de Pau river at approximately 200 metres elevation, it serves as the principal gateway to the western Pyrenees and lies roughly 100 kilometres from the Spanish border. The city has a population of approximately 77,000 and historically developed as a winter health resort favoured by British aristocracy during the 19th century, leaving a legacy of English-style parks, a golf club founded in 1856 as the oldest in continental Europe, and a cosmopolitan architectural character distinct from other Gascon towns.
