Grenoble is a city in the Isere department of southeastern France, situated at the confluence of the Isere and Drac rivers at the foot of the French Alps. It serves as the prefecture of the Isere department and is part of the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes administrative region. With a metropolitan population of approximately 700,000, it is one of the largest cities in the Alps and a major European centre for scientific research, hosting institutions including the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility and the Institut Laue-Langevin. The city hosted the 1968 Winter Olympics and remains a significant gateway for alpine tourism in France.
