Dimmuborgir is a protected volcanic lava field located on the eastern shore of Lake Myvatn in the Norðurland eystra region of northeast Iceland, approximately 7 kilometers from the village of Reykjahlid. The formation was created roughly 2,300 years ago when a lava flow from the Ludent volcanic system overran a wetland, trapping steam that created the distinctive pillars, arches, and cave chambers visible today. The site is managed within the Lake Myvatn and Laxa River Nature Reserve, a protected area of significant geological and biological importance recognized at the national level.
