Dettifoss is located in Vatnajokull National Park in northeast Iceland, within the Jokulsargljufur canyon section of the park. It sits along the Jokulsa a Fjollum glacial river at approximately 65.8 degrees north latitude, roughly 30 kilometres from Lake Myvatn and 150 kilometres from Akureyri. The falls discharge an average of 193 cubic metres of water per second, making it the most powerful waterfall in Europe by volume. The surrounding landscape is a product of repeated glacial flooding events and ongoing volcanic activity, placing the site within one of the most geologically active regions on the planet.
